NET-ZERO & CLIMATE-SMART FARMING
Farming for a Changing Climate
Productive agriculture. Healthier soils. A lower environmental footprint.
Climate change affects Ghanaian agricultural production through shifting rainfall patterns, heat stress, droughts, floods, and changing pest and disease pressures. At the same time, farming can contribute to emissions through inefficient fuel use, synthetic fertilisers, and unmanaged waste. NZFA provides practical pathways to build resilient, resource-efficient farms.
DEFINITIONS & REALISM
What Does Net-Zero Farming Mean in Practice?
Net-zero farming aims to balance greenhouse gas emissions associated with agricultural activities with verified removals or other appropriately accounted-for reductions.

For Ghanaian farmers, this requires more than planting trees or adopting a single green technology. It involves understanding where emissions arise, reducing avoidable emissions, improving resource efficiency, and measuring progress credibly.
Not every farm can achieve net zero immediately. NZFA promotes a practical, step-by-step transition based on the farm's production system, available resources, and local capacity.
ACTION PLAN
Our 7 Priority Areas
Field-tested interventions designed for Ghanaian soils, tropical rainfall patterns, and cropping systems.
Soil Health & Regenerative Practices
Healthy soil supports crop growth, water retention, and long-term productivity. Learn about cover crops, crop rotation, organic composting, erosion control, residue management, and soil testing.
Efficient Water Management
Improve irrigation scheduling, reduce conveyance water losses, construct rainwater collection bunds, and select practices that reflect local Ghanaian water availability.
Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency
Explore the potential of solar-powered irrigation, efficient submersible DC pumps, solar drying for grain and fruits, and other technologies that replace costly fossil fuel generators.
Responsible Fertiliser & Input Use
Promote soil-informed nutrient management, appropriate application rates, integrated pest management (IPM), and the safe use of approved organic biological inputs.
Livestock & Organic Waste Management
Explore improved animal feeding and herd management, proper manure collection, aerobic composting, and farm biogas applications where feasible.
Agroforestry & Farm Biodiversity
Integrate beneficial shade trees, boundary hedgerows, and pollinator-friendly corridors that protect topsoil against tropical torrential rain, support microclimates, and boost farm resilience.
Post-Harvest Loss Reduction
Better harvest timing, clean sorting, hermetic grain storage bags, ventilated crates, and solar cold rooms reduce food losses and ensure all invested resources translate into income.
MEASUREMENT DISCIPLINE
Measure What Matters
Environmental claims must be supported by appropriate evidence rather than assumptions. We encourage farms to monitor realistic operational indicators:
Water use per unit of agricultural output
Fertiliser and fuel consumption tracked per season
Crop yields, marketable grades, and production losses
Soil-management practices (mulch coverage, organic matter)
Energy consumption and solar kWh generated on-farm
Agricultural waste reuse, composting, and disposal rates
Estimated greenhouse gas emissions, where credible data and methodologies exist
Indicators should be selected according to the farm's size and production system. A smallholder vegetable farmer tracks water and input spend; larger cooperatives monitor solar kilowatt hours and harvest loss percentages.
Sustainability That Makes Business Sense
Net-zero farming should strengthen both environmental outcomes and farm viability. Improvements need to be practical, affordable, and suited to the local context.
Grow better. Waste less. Protect the resources that sustain your business.
